Ronnie Egambaram upbeat about the rest of the tournament
Ronnie Egambaram, President of the Swaziland Cricket Association, was upbeat after the opening of the ICC Africa U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier Division 2 in Big Bend, Swaziland.
Egambaram said after the opening ceremony that this was a small demonstration of the potential of cricket in the Kingdom of Swaziland. He added that the Royal Swazi Government, as a consequence of this tournament, has begun to embrace the game of cricket in a very positive way.
This optimism was carried over to the field by the Swaziland U19 team. At Ubombo Country Club field, the hosts managed beat Mozambique by three wickets. The combination of tight fielding and steady bowling saw the visitors bowled out for 53 all out in 24 overs.
In the other fixture of the day at U-Tech field, Nigeria thrashed Gambia by an impressive 10 wickets. Gambia elected to bat first and was bundled out for 112. The Nigerian batting went about the task very professionally and knocked the target off in 12 overs with ten wickets in hand.
This emphatic win for Nigeria has sent a very clear message to the other teams in the qualifier. The winner of the Division two will compete in the ICC Africa CWCQ Div 1 to be held in Windhoek next month.
Tuesday's fixtures will see Gambia playing Mozambique at Sisekelo High School while Rwanda will begin its campaign against Nigeria at Ubombo Country Club.
