Kenya began their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with a 92-run win over Afghanistan in the first One-Day International of a three-match series at the Nairobi Gymkhana on Thursday.
Kenya opted to bat first and made 180 in 46.2 overs. Veteran Steve Tikolo made 57 off 65 balls with five boundaries and one six. New captain Jimmy Kamanade made a brisk 27-ball 31 with three boundaries and two sixes. For Afghanistan, fast bowlers Hamid Hasan (4-26) and Mirwais Ashraf (4-35) were the best bowlers on view.
In reply, Afghanistan chase never really took off as no one apart from openers Noor Ali Zadran (41: 72b, 4x4) and Karim Sadiq (19) got into double figures. The chase went awry and the side folded up for 88 in just 27.5 overs. For Kenya medium-pacer Nehemiah Odhiambo picked up 3-16 and was well backed by veteran Thomas Odoyo (2-28). Off-spinner James Ngoche also picked 2-11.
The second match of the series will be played on 9 October.
