Johny Gomez, President of Gambia Cricket Association (GCA), is confident of the team's success in the ICC Africa Division 3 event in Malawi in October 2009 after participating in the past three competitions.
Gambia will join five other teams from the Africa region – Lesotho, Malawi, Morocco, Rwanda and Sierra Leone - to compete in a 50-over round-robin format to win the title which will promote it to Division 2 in Benoni next year.
Players for the team were selected based on their performances in league and knock-out competitions and the final squad has been in training since July 2009.
On the game's growth in the country, Gomez said: "The sport is getting popular with students in primary and senior secondary schools in Gambia with girls also taking up the sport. GCA has also released our development plan to spread the game throughout the whole country. We have covered four regions, and will be introducing the plan to three more regions in the future."
He agrees that the development plan is not without its share of problems: "We need permanent coaches to be going to schools. Our current four coaches are doing a fantastic job with the students, and we would be very grateful if they are employed as full-time paid staff. Also, in our wish-list is a bowling machine to help in our coaching plans and financial support to get our own cricket ground."
