Hosts Malawi continued its fine form in the ICC Africa World Cricket League Division 3 event with a 46-run win over Rwanda on Sunday. The match, played at Minge Sports Club with a sizable crowd in attendance, turned out to be a tightly-contested affair.
Playing on a fresh track, Malawi won the toss and took advantage of the familiar conditions electing to bat. It was soon in early trouble losing four wickets for 56 runs. The lower order managed to contribute valuable runs as it scrapped to 172 all out. Naeem Chaudry again batted well with 33 off 43 balls. The Rwandan bowler for the day was Shijith Kallada with 3-13, who surprisingly, was made to bowl only four overs.
Opener Andre Kayitera began Rwanda's run-chase well scoring 43 off 93 balls. The team was nicely set in pursuit with the total at 108-6 and 15 overs left. However, Malawi's Zafar Sukhera broke the back of Rwanda's lower order picking three wickets in five balls. He ended with figures of 4-16 in nine overs.
In the other game of the day, Sierra Leone comprehensively defeated Gambia in its first match by 181 runs at the Country Club Limbe. Sierra Leone set a formidable total of 255-7 with Abu Baka Kamara making an unbeaten 81 off 113 balls.
In response, Gambia crumbled to a paltry 74 in 27.2 overs. Bami Williams was the pick of the bowlers for Sierra Leone taking 3-1 in 1.2 overs.
