Cassim Suliman, Regional Development Manager, confirms the promotion of Sierra Leone and Malawi to WCL Div 2 in 2010
ICC Africa Regional Development Manager, Cassim Suliman, has confirmed that the top two countries from ICC Africa World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 in Malawi, will be promoted to WCL Div 2 in 2010. The top two ? Malawi, the eventual winners, and Sierra Leone - will both compete in the next leg to ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) glory.
Malawi, who has been in the cricketing wilderness for the last few years, has begun its resurgence with an unbeaten run at the WCL Div 3 hosted in Blantyre, Malawi. At the start of the tournament, the Malawi team had made its intentions very clear and lived up to its billing as the top side in the tournament.
Sierra Leone has enjoyed a particularly good run of form lately. Its U19 side won the Africa U19 CWC Qualifier Division 2 in Maputo earlier this year and it was also runners up to Uganda in the ICC Africa U19 CWC Qualifier Division 1 in Lusaka in April, thus promoting both sides to the ICC U19 CWC Qualifier in Canada. Ultimately Sierra Leone did not, however, compete in this tournament as it was not granted visas to go to Canada.
Five young men from this U19 squad represented the senior national team at the recent WCL Div 3 event and the team can only wait to see if its magical journey will continue in Johannesburg in April next year.
