Tanzania make flying start in Africa Women's Cup

Sun, Dec 18, 2011 6:06 PM

Tanzania went into an early lead at the top of the table with successive victories in the Pepsi ICC Africa T20 Women's tournament in Uganda.

Tanzania enjoyed a six-run win in their opening match against Namibia before defeating Kenya by nine runs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala on Saturday.

Their first victory came by a narrow margin after posting 94-4 from their 20 overs, with skipper Monica Paschal scoring 28.

Namibia could only make 88-6 in reply with Carmin Liebenberg making 39.

Tanzania's most successful bowlers were Hawa Mgoa (2-10) and Mwanaidi Amy (2-19).

In the other games on day one, Uganda beat Sierra Leone by 122 runs while Kenya thrashed Nigeria by 10 wickets.

Victory number two came thanks to an impressive triumph over Kenya.

Opener Monica Pascal hit 56 in Tanzania's 109 before Kenya began their response disappointingly at 17-3.

Margaret Banja then hit 46 and Sarah Bakhita 20 but it was not enough as Tanzania recorded their first victory against their fierce rivals since 2007.

Kenya had earlier made a flying start to their participation with a 10-wicket victory over Nigeria.

Their opponents could only muster 35-8 from their 20 overs before Banja (17 not out) and captain Emily Ruto (13 not out) reached their target with 15 overs in hand.

Kenya get the chance to bounce back from their shock defeat in Sunday's third round of matches against Sierra Leone.
