Kwesi Sagoe, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), expects better results for the national team after a good showing in 2009 when it participated in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 7 in Guernsey, finishing third and consequently, was placed 39th in the Global Rankings.
In an interview with 234Next.com, he said, "This year, we had a quantum leap concerning development of the game and improvement of our players. If not for the fact that we did not get to Guernsey on time and that some of the players were playing with coloured balls for the first time, then maybe, we could have been promoted to Division 6."
Sagoe highlighted that to move to the next level, Nigeria needs more concerted funding from the corporate world. He said: "The major issue was to get funding but we have written proposals and expect to get more companies interested in the game. For 2010, we hope to send the national team on tours and expose the younger players to more game time."
"The Nigeria U19 team was in Zambia for the Africa U19 Championship in April 2009 but failed to qualify for the Global qualifiers in Canada in September. However, the trip to Uganda was an eye opener for these young players and we want to maintain that momentum in 2010," he added.
