Cricket Namibia will host an U15 Cricket Festival in Windhoek from 2-6 September and has received a total sponsorship of N$25 000 from Hollard Insurance and Shoprite Checkers for the event.
The tournament will see five Namibian school teams participating as well as three mixed development teams namely a Coastal team, a combined team from the Cricket Academy and Berg Op Academy, and a combined team from HTS and Gobabis Gymnasium.
A total of twenty 40-over matches will be played with each team playing five matches on a round robin basis. The matches will take place at the Wanderers, United, CCD and Doc Jubber fields.
Cricket Namibia's Development Officer Marsia Reed said that development at the grassroot level was of the utmost importance for the development of the game.
"Cricket Namibia would like to develop the talent of U/15 players to its full potential. Most of our cricket players are lost to other activities at this age and urgent attention is required in creating sufficient opportunities to enhance the interest in the game," she said in an interview with Namibia Sport.
"With this in mind, Cricket Namibia has approached Hollard Insurance to be the main sponsor of this tournament for the hire of cricket fields and the payment of qualified umpires. Shoprite/Checkers is sponsoring the purchase of cricket balls," she added.
